How did you either start, or join the business?
Primarily I joined the business through my love of cars however having the opportunity to work with my father is an ongoing privilege.
What has been your proudest moment in work?
I have been honoured to work on many cars throughout my career so far however driving a Ferrari 365 California on the coast of Monterey was particularly special. This car was then displayed at the 2016 Pebble Beach Councours d'Elegance of which I restored alongside our talented team.
In your opinion, why should HCVA members use your services?
In short, our experience. With an already experienced team having worked on the Ferrari marque for over 40 years we have concentrated on recruiting a young, highly motivated and talented group of technicians that not only love the brand but remain eager to learn. With Bob at the helm we have a unique understanding of how a Ferrari is built and this is directly reflected in our day to day maintenance of the cars.
What is the most valuable lesson your work has taught you?
Listen to Bob.
What piece of advice about your work would you give your younger self?
I would like to of had the opportunity to join a race team to understand this world more. To appreciate the pressures of this environment and work within a team that enjoys the highs and reflects on the lows. I've always found Formula One fascinating.
What is your favourite car that you have ever owned - and why?
Peugeot 306 Meridien in racing green. I had just finished school and this car fast tracked my independence.
What is your least favourite car that you have owned - and why?
VW Polo Bluemotion. It lacked all attributes of what I love about a car but it helped at the time.
What is a great example of a future classic in your opinion?
History? Reliability? Style? Cost? Personally I would want an extensively documented history of the car that has been maintained effectively however still oozes originality. I'm happy with torn up seats from previous owners and a wonky wing mirror but performance is paramount. A great history and untampered mechanicals would be my choice.
What has been your favourite ever classic car experience?
Every year the Houghton family would take the caravan to Silverstone and watch my father manage several cars for the Coys Historic Grand Prix Series. This was a simpler time when the pits were accessible to (some) small children and where the drivers would loiter around the paddock eating a sausage sandwich before jumping into the car. Watching these formidable race cars will always be a reminder of how they should look and sound.
Why did you join the HCVA?
To support other classic car businesses and help protect the future of the classic car industry. As a business we rely on skilled individuals to assist us on a daily basis whether it be suppliers, technicians, machinists, painters etc; they all play an integral part in the history of a classic car and this must not be ignored.
