Importing a vehicle
Refer to the V55/5 guide on registering a USED imported vehicle for the first time in the UK - including vehicles brought back to the UK after being exported.
You need to supply the following original supporting documentation:
Completed V55/5 application form and supporting documents
MOT document if the vehicle is under 40 years old.
Original title document from the country of import clearly showing the date of manufacture or first registration
Or Original title document from the country of import along with a dating document from the manufacturer or other acceptable source
Or If the original title document is not available you must send a letter of explanation why, together with a dating document from the manufacturer or other acceptable source.
Things to check:
A NOVA number exists for your vehicle (Notification of Vehicle Arrival). This document shows that applicable import duties have been paid and a number is generated that the DVLA will check as part of your application.
If you do not have a NOVA number showing that you or the importer have paid the relevant import duties, then you need to notify HMRC here.
Chassis numbers (VIN) must be identical across the V55/5, original title document and NOVA otherwise your application will be rejected. NOVA status can be checked via your importer or via HMRC using the Government Gateway if you originated the NOVA yourself.
