HCVA Minimum Professional Standards for Classic Vehicle Electrification

An HCVA Initiative

The Historic & Classic Vehicles Alliance (HCVA) has introduced Minimum Professional Standards (MPS) for the conversion of historic and classic vehicles from internal combustion engines to electric drivetrains.

As interest in electric conversions continues to grow, particularly amongst owners seeking new ways to enjoy their vehicles, the HCVA has developed the MPS to promote professionalism, safety and engineering excellence across the sector.

"Converting a historic or classic vehicle to electric motive power is a significant engineering undertaking that should only be carried out by competent professionals. Our new Minimum Professional Standards, developed by industry experts and made available to UK regulatory agencies, establish a benchmark for safety and quality, helping owners make informed choices while supporting businesses committed to the highest professional standards."

Dale Keller, CEO

Why have Minimum Professional Standards?

Whilst all vehicle conversions must comply with existing UK legislation, there has been no dedicated industry benchmark specifically for the electrification of historic and classic vehicles.

Developed in partnership with leading conversion specialists and industry experts, the HCVA's Minimum Professional Standards provide a recognised framework for best practice, helping to protect customers, workshop personnel and the wider public.

The standards also provide greater confidence for vehicle owners, insurers and policymakers that conversions are carried out to recognised professional standards

HCVA Approved Conversion Specialists

  • HCVA member businesses that commit to the Minimum Professional Standards and the accompanying Code of Conduct are entitled to display the HCVA Approved logo.

The logo identifies conversion specialists who have committed to meeting or exceeding current regulations and following recognised industry best practice throughout the conversion process.

What do the Standards cover?

The MPS provides guidance across all key aspects of a professional conversion, including:

Vehicle structural integrity

Weight distribution and vehicle dynamics

High-voltage electrical system design and safety

Control system logic and fail-safe protocols

Workshop equipment and tooling

Technician competence and training

Documentation and customer handover

Following completion of the conversion, customers receive technical documentation and certification demonstrating that the vehicle has been converted in accordance with the HCVA Minimum Professional Standards.

In addition, vehicles converted by participating HCVA members have access to specialist insurance underwriting developed specifically for electrically converted historic and classic vehicles.

Supporting Responsible Innovation

The HCVA continues to engage with the UK Department for Transport and its agencies regarding vehicle regulations, whilst also monitoring future international developments through the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

By establishing these Minimum Professional Standards, the HCVA is helping ensure that classic vehicle electrification develops responsibly, safely and with the confidence of owners, industry and regulators.
